2021 SURGICAL ART COMPETITION
The Edinburgh Student Surgical Society are delighted to open submissions for their inaugural medical art competition, in partnership with Cassart Edinburgh. Following the cancellation of the 11th annual ESSS conference, we decided to expand upon the original art competition and invite all medical, nursing, biomedical and other allied students studying at the University of Edinburgh to participate.
Submitted works will be anonymised before being passed onto the judging panel. The winner and first runner up will receive prizes kindly donated to us by Cassart. The winner and successful runners up will be featured in a blogpost produced by Cassart for their website. Selected works will also be displayed on the Edinburgh surgical society webpage (with full credit) and be invited for exhibition in the Edinburgh Cassart store. The in-person exhibition is currently aimed for May 2021, but will be subject to up-to-date Covid-19 restrictions. Successful entrants will be contacted and updated about this following closure of the competition.
Each participant may only submit one piece of 2D or 3D visual artwork. Pieces depicting or based on living patients must be submitted with full, documented consent of the patient. Anatomical artwork produced from donated human specimens must be in accordance with the Anatomical Examination in Scotland: Operational Guidelines. As such, “photographs, film, digital imaging, illustrations or images may only be taken of bodies or body parts when there is documented consent by the donor and confirmation of this at the time of acceptance of the body’ and ‘no image should disclose the identity of the deceased. Images or photographs should adhere to normal bounds of decency’. An extended version of the relevant guidelines can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rXwJNsTurdUpeQOSAOXR-rbLvPLaPbBi/view?usp=sharing
Participants must submit their own, original artwork and ensure that these adhere to the relevant copyright.
Submission deadline: 12 noon - 14th March 2021
