EVENTS
ESSS hosts a range of events throughout the year, specifically tailored to allow students to develop their surgical interest, skills and portfolio through interacting with guest surgeons and speakers.
The ESSS Undergraduate Surgical Teaching Series covers surgical topics at the level expected of clinical year students. The content is relevant to the Edinburgh Medical School curriculum and is extremely useful for exams! Sessions run throughout the year, and consist of a presentation followed by small group case discussions.
In 2019, Junior Vice President Aya Riad worked in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to produce a surgical Careers Roadshow, in which students had the chance to network at stalls hosted by volunteers from each surgical specialty. In addition, talks delivered by Professor Rowan Parks (RCSEd Vice President), Dr Paul Brennan, and Dr Kenneth McLean guided students on how to reach a career in surgery, how to construct a strong portfolio, and gave them insight into the future of the surgical field, respectively. The evening was very successful, with a great student turnout and excellent feedback. The Careers Roadshow has been run yearly since and takes place in semester one.
Mark your calendars because the ESSS 15th Annual Undergraduate Surgery and Trauma Conference is back for the 15th year running on Saturday 30th March 2024! The theme this year is ‘Celebrating and Championing Diversity in Surgery’. We hope to deliver a range of talks centred around diversity in surgery, alongside interactive workshops and student research presentations, at the historic venue of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd).
The ESSS finals weekend is a two day FREE online revision series covering the main topics for finals in all the main specialties and will take place from 10:00-16:00 on Saturday 13th and Saturday 20th January 2024. For more information and to see the recordings and slides visit our MedAll page.
ESSS also hosts two outreach events for prospective medical students: Getting into Medicine Weekend (early September), delivered by current medical students, equipping attendees with top tips and tricks on how to get into medical school; and Medical Taster Day (April), which will include interactive surgical stations, talks from professionals and more, to give attendees a flavour of what medical school will be like.
