WHAT WE DO
At ESSS, we’re passionate about providing students with the adequate tools to confidently pursue a career in surgery. During medical school, exposure to surgery – whether that be attainment of surgical skills through practice, work experience, access to current research or networking opportunities – is incredibly limited. Our society hosts a variety of events endeavouring to fill this void; this includes regular surgical skills workshops, academic tutorials, careers workshops, lectures from notable speakers, and a selection of special events.
Such events to note include our Careers Roadshow, a fabulous networking opportunity for members, during which they can find out about a range of surgical specialties and receive portfolio advice. In partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, we host our well-established National Undergraduate Surgery and Trauma Conference every March. This is a great day during which delegates can learn about the future of surgery via talks from renowned speakers and a range of interactive workshops.
Members can also benefit from our surgical skills club, through which they can develop practical surgical skills like cyst excision, knot tying and suturing, whilst further improving their surgical understanding and critical thinking skills. Special thanks to eoSurgical, who have provided us with laparoscopy simulation kits for members to utilise.
We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors, for supporting us and making our events more accessible for members.
Finally, we’re a friendly society, and we run several socials throughout the year. We are always happy to welcome new members! Find out more about becoming a member here.
