Surgery in Low Resource Settings.    Ms Mhairi Collie OBE

Tuesday 23rd November 2021, 7pm
Newcastle Students for global health are delighted to have Ms Mhairi Collie OBE a consultant colorectal surgeon from Edinburgh talking to us about her experiences.
Ms Collie has dedicated 20 years of her career to the Ugandan Childbirth Injury Fund. She helped set up the Ugandan Childbirth Injury Fund in 2001 and took over as chairperson in 2018. She has spent the past 20 years dedicating her own time to travel to Uganda 2-3 times a year for 1-2 weeks at a time to help cure women who have sustained dreadful injuries during childbirth. Mhairi undertakes 40-50 operations during each mission.
During each mission, she operates on complex cases and train local surgeons to perform these operations. A few of the local surgeons are now skilled enough to operate independently and leading teaching camps around the whole Uganda.
Recently awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for services to medicine, and a recipient of the Global Citizen of the Year Award, Ms Collie is an inspirational woman in surgery and we cannot wait to hear her talk.

This talk is open to all, no membership required.

ON BEHALF OF DUNDEE UNIVERSITY SURGICAL SOCIETY :

Thursday 10th December 2020
Urology is a surgical speciality with minimal undergraduate teaching. Commonly your first experience is to catheterise a patient however, trainees are often left without knowing how to manage them any further. Additionally, 3 of the 10 most common male cancers are Urological and with an aging population their prevalence will only continue to rise. Urology is at the forefront of new technologies including the widespread adoption of robot assisted surgery so hopefully I can provide an insight before your first catheter and highlight the breadth of the speciality.
Come join us on Tuesday, the 15th of December at 19:00 (U.K. time) as we present to you the latest in our Surgery Made Easy webinar series, on Zoom: Life Beyond a Catheter Service: Emergency Urology courtesy of our wonderful guest speaker; Mr Kenneth Russell MacKenzie, ST7 in Urology!
The lecture will take place as an interactive session, allowing you to utilise your own clinical knowledge in approaching and addressing key patient issues! Certificates will be provided for all those that attend the lecture AND complete the feedback form! Note that the link for the feedback form will only be open for responses for 3 days, after the session and that certificates will be made available to you a few days after feedback completion.
We look forward to seeing you at the session.
