Hi, I am Magdalena, and I am delighted to take on the role of President this year. I am in my final year of the MBChB programme and have previously intercalated in BMedSci (Hons) Health Sciences. I am passionate about encouraging medical students to explore surgery, making surgery more accessible to medical students, and breaking stereotypes often associated with surgeons. I look forward to representing ESSS and supporting our incredible committee in all the exciting events that we are running this year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
Hiya! My name’s Jingjing and I’m delighted to be the ESSS Senior Vice-President for this academic year. I’m in my fourth year (of med school and ESSS - they still haven’t gotten rid of me yet ahaha), having previously intercalated in Surgical Sciences. My primary interests lie in Paediatric and Orthopaedic surgery, but I’m also really passionate about academic surgery, education, and widening participation. If any of these pique your interest, do send me a message! This year, I’ll be organising the finals weekend as well as supporting our fantastic committee in all their amazing work.
JUNIOR VICE PRESIDENT
Hi, I’m Liza and I’m excited to continue my fourth year on the ESSS committee as Junior Vice President! I have just entered fifth year and had previously intercalated in Surgical Sciences. I have interest in multiple surgical specialties, so don’t worry if you’re not set yet since that’s what our society is for! I’m passionate about teaching and am hoping to expand our support to you through our various events throughout the year. This year, I’ll be organising the Careers Roadshow and I hope this will help provide insight into the various subspecialties within Surgery!
Hi, I'm Sophia, 5th year medical student, and I'm very excited to be secretary this year. As well as handling all the admin and internal business, I am very much looking forward to getting involved in all the exciting events the ESSS committee will be running. I'm passionate about surgical education and making surgery a more accessible career pathway for students. In terms of specialty, I'm particularly interested in orthopaedics and always love to see a good x-ray of a total hip replacement.
Hello! My name is Beatrice and I’m a fourth year medical student, having just finished intercalating in Physiology. I first became interested in surgery as a result of attending ESSS events in my first year, and since then having been involved on committee as Publicity Manager and Conference Convener. As Treasurer I will be managing the society’s finances, as well as coordinating the Edinburgh Award.
Hi I am Jen. I am excited to be part of the committee this year as one of the publicity managers. I really enjoyed the events hosted in the previous semesters and glad to have the opportunity to engage with you all again at our events and on SNS! I also have a very keen interest in robotic and plastic surgery. I hope to encourage all those that have an interest in surgery and together we can learn from our peers. I look forward to meeting all of you in person/virtually at some of the great activities/sessions coming up!
Hi I’m Sophie and I’m one of the publicity officers for ESSS this year! I am really excited to be part of the team and let you know all about our great events!
I’m Usaamah and I’m the ESSS Conference Convenor along with Luca this year. I’m currently in fifth year, having previously intercalated in surgical sciences. I was lucky enough to be on the committee last year as Surgical Skills Club manager and I hope to spend another year learning about surgery and helping out at other ESSS events. I’m looking forward to organising and running the 14th ESSS Annual Undergraduate Surgery and Trauma Conference and I hope to put together an interesting and insightful conference.
Hello! My name is Luca and I am currently a 4th year medical student. Having dabbled in a little regenerative medicine in my intercalation last year, I'm really interested in the use of stem cells and grafts within surgery. Building on my experiences as ESSS Outreach Convenor last year, I'm excited to organise the 14th ESSS Annual Undergraduate Surgery and Trauma Conference with my fellow Conference Convenor, Usaamah. I'm also looking forward to helping out in the various projects the society are planning to run throughout the year.
SURGICAL SKILLS MANAGERS
Hi, I’m Maia, I’m in fifth year and am excited to be joining the ESSS committee this year. I am one of the Surgical Skills club managers which means I will be helping to organise our weekly surgical skills sessions. I’m keen to make our sessions as accessible as possible and am sure they will be a lot of fun. I’m still exploring many surgical specialties but I'm currently especially interested in pediatric surgery and emergency surgery. Outside of medicine I enjoy going for long cycling and wild swimming. I look forward to meeting many of you in our tuesday skills sessions!!
Hi, I’m Will and I’m one of the Surgical Skills Club managers for this year, along with my colleague, Maia. I’m currently in my fifth year and have developed a keen interest in orthopaedics since the beginning of my clinical placements. My other interest include rugby, golf and sea sports. This year in Surgical Skills Club, we’re hoping to give as many people as possible the chance to get involved and develop some vital skills to help you in the future. We’ve organised an amazing group of tutors to provide the best possible teaching, so it’s not one to miss! I look forward to meeting you all during our Tuesday sessions!
Hi I’m Huzefah and I’m a 3rd year Medic, intercalating in Infectious Diseases. I am outreach convenor for the surgical society this year. I hope to use my own experiences and knowledge to craft helpful events for future medical students! In my spare time, I enjoy staying active and playing sports.
ACADEMIC TUTORIALS MANAGER
Hello! I’m Lucas, a 5th-year Medical Student with an interest in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. I’m stoked to take on the role of Academic Tutorials Manager this year. Finals revision can be a daunting challenge and I aim to help you get through it by delivering high-yield revision tutorials. I will also be running the Undergraduate Surgical Teaching Series after a successful run last year. As a Manchester United fan, you can be sure that I’ll support you even when you’re at your lowest points (whilst revising for finals) – Feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions!
Hi everyone! I’m Alexis, a fifth year medical student from Singapore who intercalated in Management at Imperial. I’m new to the committee, but am super excited to be taking on the role of Sponsorship Manager this year as well as learn more about a career in surgery amongst so many like-minded peers. I’m hoping to make a big difference in working with more external organisations to help ESSS gain access to more educational materials and resources for our members - so remember to come along to our events to take full advantage of them!
1ST YEAR REPRESENTATIVE
Hiya, my name is Rayyan Khalid, I'm a first year medical student from Glasgow. A little bit about me is that I like to play table tennis and go to the gym in my free time. This is my first role on a university committee, however I am extremely exited to be involved in the EUSS as surgery is a big passion of my own. This year I believe I'll be updating the website, I hope to use my skills to help the society as best as possible and I look forward to the rest of the year.
