Having joined ESSS since my first year and being on the committee for the past 3 years, it has been a major highlight of my medical school experience and I am very grateful for all the opportunities that it has provided me. I have always had a keen interest in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and ESSS has helped me expand my knowledge upon a career in surgery through various events and networking opportunities. Here are some of my experiences highlighting the benefits of joining ESSS:
Tutorials ESSS offers a variety of tutorials ranging from surgical skills to academic tutorials. We were able to implement a regular surgical skills club last year alongside an assessment plan so that our attendees can be recognised for their achievements. Having been to a few of these tutorials throughout the years, it really has helped me gain the confidence to be able to assist in theatre and hands-on experience. Surgical teaching is often limited in the medical curriculum and ESSS aims to fill this gap for students and nurture surgical interest through these events. Being on the committee also allows you to organise tutorials yourself too besides attending. I particularly enjoyed organising sessions for pre-clinical years as you get the chance to interact with younger years and introduce them to surgery at the stage where they get the least exposure. This is also a great opportunity for you to gain invaluable teaching experience which is something that medical school cannot teach you! Events This is a great way to stay up to date with surgical world and keep informed! As the biggest student surgical society in Edinburgh, we aim to provide a variety of content so you can get a flavour of each specialty. The annual Careers Roadshow in November is a great opening event of each year, providing students with direct networking opportunities with surgeons and a glance into the career path. Having organised the Roadshow this year, it was a great learning experience in terms of hosting a mass online event, communicating with external co-organisers, and liaising with multiple speakers. Despite the juggling and hard work, it was a fun process and extremely rewarding at the end. Our annual conference in March is the biggest event in our calendar. I have been attending almost every year and each time I walk away inspired. The array of speakers are always hand picked carefully according to the chosen theme for the year by our convenors, and they always have remarkable stories to tell. Alongside this, we work with the Royal College of Surgeons and our sponsors each year to make these events happen and it is wonderful to see such support for undergraduate surgical promotion. Social We emphasise the fact that pre-clinical years should never feel that they are not able to get involved in surgery just because they have not had any clinical exposure yet! We welcome students of any year and it is always fantastic to see a diverse turnout and meeting other students through ESSS which creates a very supportive environment. Being in the committee has also been an incredible experience and has become a big part of my life at medical school. It is amazing to work with such like-minded people and we do have a healthy amount of committee socials in the calendar too! In a pre-pandemic world, we often hold brunch meetings, Christmas meals, and a big celebration post-conference (Café Andaluz may or may not be involved). I really do encourage everyone to try and run for a position at the AGM as the ESSS team is a lovely bunch and great to collaborate with. I’m really thankful for all the opportunities that the society has given me, and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for ESSS! ESSS thanks our Junior Vice-President Claudia Chan for writing this blog post.

Melatonin is frequently prescribed to people who suffer from anxiety and insomnia. When utilising it for dogs, though, various issues arise. Dogs can experience insomnia or depression because they have feelings, too. The only issue is that they are unable to communicate these issues with you. Many research have so far shown both positive and negative effects of melatonin supplementation for dogs. When selecting a supplement for your dog, consider the Benefits and Disadvantages of Melatonin for Dogs listed below.
